Ringkasan Kegiatan

Dissimilar metal welding between stainless steel and carbon steel has a wide range of applications including in the automotive, oil and gas industries, power plants, aircraft, turbines, and others. Since welding might change the metallurgical characteristics between the two different metals and therefore there might be differences in the optimal conditions between the two metals after the weld including their toughness. To overcome this possibility problem, optimal heat treatment is needed i.e. by preheat and Post-Welding Heat Treatment (PWHT). The purposes of this study are to evaluate the toughness and morphology of welds and HAZ of austenitic stainless steels with preheat variation (none, 100oC, 150oC, 200oC) and PWHT (none, 450oC, 520oC). It was found that the preheat and PWHT variations given in the present research did not significantly influence the toughness of welding. From microstructure characterization it was obtained that no adverse phases such as carbide and sigma phase were observed. In addition, the results of SEM / EDS shows an indication of carbide formation at the grain boundary.
