Ringkasan Kegiatan

In general, discourse and research by Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) focuses more on discussing from a monograph perspective, the interpretation of socio-cultural meanings in the context of the history of modern Indonesian art. During his career, he was also known as a palace painter in the Soekarno era. In 1961 Lee Man Fong was asked by the president to do a special commission work representing the theme of Indonesia's diverse imagery through a panel painting "Pustpita Margasatwa Indonesia" for Grand Hotel Indonesia Kempinski-Jakarta. The visual characteristics, materials, sizes, and techniques are different from a few works that have been made before. This painting uses a mixture of paint material on three canvas panels in the shape of a tryptic curve structure, which was originally placed on the wall of the Ramayana restaurant. Pustpita Margasatwa Indonesia painting was made during 1961 to 1962. In fact, this painting was produced directly by Lee Man Fong, who was assisted by 4 painter's assistants such as Lim Wa Sim, Tjio Soen Djie, Siauw Swie Ching, and Lee Rern. However, the results of the early physical investigation, interview, and seminar showed that there was no indication of direct involvement of the four assistants during the process of describing it.

During the hotel renovation process, the painting "Pustpita Margasatwa Indonesia" was moved into one of the lobby rooms until now. The displacement resulted in several cracks in the physical structure of the paint, weathering of the material, and changes in the intensity of the painting color. In this study, we want investigate the visual characteristics, techniques, and pigment materials used by painters through testing the structure of the color layer, the content of oil and metal compounds and the effect on color change using multi-technical methods, namely SEM microanalysis, XRD, XRF and Raman spectroscopy. to produce a unique visual existence, material from color, technique, and specific treatment in panel painting. The results showed that this panel painting is still the greatest Lee Man Fong's work ever made.
