Ringkasan Kegiatan

Radio astronomy is a subfield of astronomy that studies celestial objects at radio wavelengths or frequencies. Currently, there are some plans to develop advanced radio astronomy facilities in Indonesia. One of the ways is to convert 32-m JAH-2 Indosat Ooredoo communication antenna into radio telescope. The future radio telescope has potential to be part of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to obtain high resolution astronomical data. In order to develop the radio astronomy facilities, it is important to introduce radio astronomy to the young generation or young astronomers and public. Therefore, we have organized public lectures and workshop, i.e., Lecture on Radio Astronomy & Tutorial for VLBI Data Reduction on 24 – 28 February 2020. The public lecture and the workshop was a collaboration program between ITB, NAOJ, Narit, Yamaguchi University, Ibaraki University, and Indosat Ooredoo. There were about 100 participants in the public lectures and 50 participants in the workshop. The guest lectures were radio astronomers from JAPAN, Thailand, and UK. We received great enthusiasm from the participants and the lectures. The public lectures and workshop were not only help us to understand radio astronomy, but also broadening network and open the way for future research collaboration.

Astronomical objects emit radiation not only at the optical wavelength, but also at the other wavelengths. Information at many wavelengths is very important to get a complete understanding of an astronomical object.
