The marine tourism industry now demands that traditional ships be convenient to operate and compliant with safety standards to accommodate more passengers. However, traditional shipbuilders have rarely considered utilizing bilge keels as a means to comply with regulations regarding rolling motion reduction. This research paper focuses on determining the optimal position of bilge keels on traditional Phinisi Boats operating in the shipping regions of Lombok and Labuan Bajo to reduce the roll amplitude. The study employed the commercial software to conduct simulations that captured the roll motion response and predicted the resulting ship resistance. The analysis addresses the geometry and position of the bilge keel, the natural roll period, and the influence of compliance on changes in forward velocity, both with and without bilge keels. The results demonstrate a 14% decrease in roll amplitudes and a 4% increase in resistance. Thus, bilge keels have a significant impact on safety, and traditional wooden boats will require bilge keels of adequate construction in the future.
