Through a series of R&D activities that initiated by The Center for Rattan Innovation (PIRNAS), the craftsman and young designers involved in this training activities had successfully came up with some potential exploration of rattan carving. The carving application on rattan core waste resulting from the rattan furniture industry has brought possibility of a new way of exploring rattan material characteristics besides bending. Therefore, we propose to further develop this method and produce a number of interior home décor designs. We applied design method that employs community of local craftsmen in Tegalwangi. We made a series activity of design training through a commercial purchase order system, that way, they can produce new products and saw the activities as a business not a voluntary activities. We introduced following techniques during the design workshop: a) Woven contour exploration techniques by modifying rattan structures. b) Reinforcement systems (joinery) to avoid rattan being torn / peeled when assembled. c) Making simple punch tools (cutting knives) The initial step was to make a number of alternative home decor designs, which is processed by carving techniques. Of the several design alternatives that had been obtained, we carried out a design development by making some modular carving and 3D models. The propose designs were kept adjusted to meet material efficiency requirement in term of production.
