Shoreline changes occur either naturally due to waves, currents, or sea level rise, or caused by human activities such as coastal structures, reclamation, and sand mining. The changes will directly influence the strategic and environmental aspects of coastal area. For instance, coastal erosion leads to loss of land area which usually densely populated, creating economic, social, and environmental problems in the area. Sand mining is one of human activities which can cause changes in coastal morphology. In Indonesia, offshore sand mining activities have been going on for decades in many areas, for example in Kancinaa Village (South-East Sulawesi), Labu Island (North Sumatra), Sanrobone District (South Sulawesi), and at the northern coast of Banten Province. The local people near the mining locations have started to raise the environmental issues of this activity where they suspect that the dredging activities result in erosion and flooding to the coastal area. In this preliminary study, the effect of sand mining or offshore dredging on the shoreline changes is examined using a numerical hydrodynamic model. The study case takes place in Lontar Village, which is located in northern coast of Banten Province, Java.
