There are many ways to obtain special glazes, from application, formula engineering, and firing techniques. The uniqueness of a product shall be appreciated by society, whether personally, or financially. Ash glaze is a way to obtain such uniqueness. Ash glazes are still seldom utilized by Indonesian ceramic artists or craftsmen despite the unique effects it could impart such as runny glazes and unique surface textures (lizard skin-like). This research activity classifies the types of ash based on its’ chemical analysis. Like glazes, ashes contain substances such as Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Carbonate, Phospate, and other metallic elements, which would melt during firing in high temperatures and would impart gloss to the ceramic. Each tree possess different chemical compositions, which would yield different effects. Climate, soil, age of the tree, and the part of the tree that was burned to ash can determine the quality of the ash.
