Ringkasan Kegiatan

The river in the site location at Tanggulan, Dago Pojok, has suffered severe deterioration due to sedimentation and domestic wastewater pollution. ITB with UN-ESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific) formed a partnership to implement river restoration activities at the site. As a final level of processing to further improve water quality and to increase public awareness in forming a sustainable environment, a community-based restoration plan was implemented. The main objective of this community service is river restoration using the application of bio-eco engineering technology to enhance self-purification processes and carrying capacity of ecosystems with the increment of community awareness in sustainable environment. The bio-eco engineering technology has many advantages, such as: a) Abundant availability of the resources, b) High reduction of BOD and solids, c) Water biota grows rapidly and is attractive, d) Low to moderate capital cost; operating cost can be offset by revenue, e) Potential for local job creation and income generation, f) Can be built and maintained with locally available materials. One application of bio-eco engineering technology that matches the condition at the project site is Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs).
