Based on data Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, almost 60% of high school students in Indonesia have poor science literacy (below level 2). This shows that students cannot use science knowledge in events that are often encountered. Chemistry is part of science and affected by this condition. Chemistry learning is often seen as difficult and abstract because students do not see the correlation of chemical knowledge and daily life. With cosmetics, good for cleanliness, skin and face maintenance and beautifying themselves (makeup). Lack of understanding of materials, production systems, how to find information and safety cosmetics can be dangerous for students.
The two conditions above are the background of this community service, namely increasing student literacy through the introduction of cosmetic materials, so that with the hope that students will get insight into chemical learning relations with daily life. The activity was carried out in 2 high schools, namely Bilingual Private High School in the city of Bandung and at SMAN 1 Sumedang on 26 and 27 October 2023 with a total number of students around 300 people. > Overall the purpose of this community service can be divided into several, namely:
a) Introducing Bachelor of Chemistry and FMIPA ITB
b) Into the understanding of science and chemistry is used in everyday life
c) Teaching how to get information related to chemicals in cosmetics
d) Teach how to read the label of cosmetic products
e) Remind the importance of safety and health in the use of products.
Generally given how to choose a safe cosmetics by "click" (check packaging, labels, permits and expiration date). In the label section introduced various types of chemicals that exist, their nature, recognize dosage, dangerous meanings, how to find chemical data through various sites, and read Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) material. For permission to be taught to see the BPOM site, recognize various types of permits and cosmetic criteria. Considering that a private school is a dwishing school, the presentation material is displayed in English with delivery in Indonesian, while in SMAN 1 Sumedang in Indonesian. Also given souvenirs of various examples of cosmetics that are safe for teenagers to encourage them to play an active role in question and answer. Explanation of ITB and Chemical Study Program is tucked in to turn on the topic. Acting as the main speaker is Dra. Samitha D. D, PhD, Prof. M. Bachri Amran, and Prof. M. Ali Zulfikar, while other team members gave various questions to the participants and became speakers when interviewed by students at private high schools after the seminar session. Positive appreciation is given by the second party of the school for this activity. At SMAN 1 Sumedang, which at the same time was visited by Regional Coordinator 8 of the West Java Education Office gave birth to a request for coordinators so that similar activities were carried out in other schools in their regions. This request cannot be met.
Increase the chemical literacy of high school students
Chemical literacy will affect science literacy and its hopes will have an impact on the ability to think logically and how to see the cause and effect relationships
