The ITB Community Service Team (Pengmas) conducted a community engagement project in Gresik, organized in collaboration with the School of Life Sciences and Technology (SITH) and the School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development (SAPPK) on June 24 and 25, 2024.
The project, titled "Coastal Landscape Planning and the Use of Educational Instruments 'Birds, Blocks, and Biotopes' in Mitigation, Adaptation, and Disaster Management in the Essential Mangrove Ecosystem of Ujungpangkah, Gresik," was officially opened by Banyuurip Village Head Ikhsanul Haris, alongside the event coordinator Dr. Dian Rosleine at Banyuurip Village Hall, Ujungpangkah District.
According to Ranti Aulia Siregar, this initiative stemmed from a master’s thesis by Landscape Architecture student Claresta Dhyhan, focusing on mangrove ecosystem management in Ujungpangkah from multiple perspectives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among community members, government, media, industry, and academia. This project was guided by Dr. Mohammad Zaini Dahlan from SAPPK ITB and Dr. Dian Rosleine from SITH ITB.
Building on this study, the ITB Community Service Team launched a board game-based educational activity to raise awareness among local residents, particularly students, on the importance of mangrove ecosystems. Approximately 50 students from elementary to high school levels attended the session, which included a demonstration of the educational game "Birds, Blocks, and Biotopes."
This initiative aims to foster environmental awareness among the younger generation in Banyuurip, helping them develop an appreciation for mangroves as an essential ecosystem. Ranti expressed hope that this program would inspire "local heroes" dedicated to mangrove conservation and coastal disaster risk reduction.
