Landslide Disaster Response in Cibenda Village, Cipongkor District, West Bandung Regency by LPPM ITB, Unpad, and PT Wings Group

On Saturday night, March 24, 2024, Cibenda Village in Cipongkor District, West Bandung Regency (KBB), was struck by a natural disaster that devastated much of Gintung Hamlet RT 03/07 and its surroundings. A massive landslide triggered by prolonged heavy rains buried dozens of houses and forced the surviving residents to evacuate.

The landslide occurred around 11:20 PM WIB, with mud mixed with wood debris rapidly flowing around the residents' homes. In an instant, these homes were buried in the mud.

Post-disaster search efforts were undertaken to find ten people believed to be trapped under the rubble.

The Head of the West Bandung Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Meidi, explained that this disaster was not an isolated incident. Flash floods occurred in Joglo Hamlet, Sirnagalih Village, while landslides hit Gintung Hamlet, Cibenda Village, Cipongkor District, all on Thursday, March 24, 2024.

Approximately 30 houses were damaged and buried in mud, and 350 people were forced to evacuate to shelters provided. The majority of the evacuees were women and the elderly.

After seven days, the official search operation was halted on March 31, 2024, but recovery and rehabilitation efforts continued. On March 29, 2024, a team from the Community Service and Research Institute (LPPM) ITB, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Padjadjaran University, the UNPAD Medical Faculty Alumni Association (IKA UNPAD), and PT Wings Group, provided aid to the landslide victims in Cibenda Village. The aid included medicines and basic necessities, aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by the disaster.
