Sumedang Earthquake Survivors' Smiles When LPPM ITB Helps Recover Trauma

Bandung - On December 31 2023, an earthquake measuring M 4.8 rocked Sumedang Regency, West Java. The earthquake damaged 1,136 housing units in 8 affected sub-districts, namely in South Sumedang, North Sumedang, Cimalaka, Ganeas, Cisarua, Tanjung Kerta, Tanjung Medar and Rancakalong.

It is known that currently the rehabilitation process is being carried out by repairing the houses of earthquake victims. Apart from physical rehabilitation of buildings, non-physical recovery after the earthquake was also carried out through trauma healing aimed at victims, one of which was carried out by the ITB Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM).

Head of the Community Service Team from the lecturer at the School of Business and Management, Bandung Institute of Technology (SBM ITB) Sri Hartati said that earthquake disasters are usually traumatic and residents are often haunted by excessive anxiety whenever an earthquake occurs again.

According to Sri, LPPM ITB was present among the Sumedang earthquake victims by providing trauma healing training to overcome post-earthquake anxiety.

"Trauma healing activities are focused on TPA Nurul Huda, Talun sub-district, which is one of the areas affected by the Sumedang earthquake. A total of 27 children aged 2 to 6 years were involved in trauma healing training. Parents of earthquake victim children were also included in the training so they could provide education for their children on how to deal with earthquakes," said Sri Hartati.

According to Sri, trauma healing activities are carried out through several activities including drawing on t-shirts, cheerful exercise and singing. The aim is to make earthquake victims, especially children, happy again, recover from trauma, not be afraid of carrying out normal activities outside the home, and be better prepared to face earthquakes.

This activity was organized by LPPM ITB involving students, accompanying teams, TPA administrators, and a number of related parties.

"We realize that community service is a noble form of charity and requires cooperation and an active role from various parties. Therefore, our presence is not just an obligation to do so but is a real manifestation of the spirit of mutual cooperation and concern for others," said Sri Hartati .

In the future, Sri continued, SBM ITB and LPPM will always be present in the community by providing training and assistance in the social and economic fields.
