Optimization of Classroom Lighting in Lhokseumawe Elementary Schools by ITB and Unimal, Enhancing Learning Quality
In an effort to improve the quality of education in elementary schools in Lhokseumawe, a Community Service Team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), in collaboration with Malikussaleh University (Unimal), conducted an evaluation and optimization of classroom lighting conditions. This program was carried out over five days, from September 2 to 6, 2024, at SDN 1 Banda Sakti and SDN 4 Banda Sakti, Lhokseumawe.
The project was led by Dr. Rizki Armanto Mangkuto from the Lighting Laboratory, Department of Engineering Physics, Faculty of Industrial Technology at ITB. The Unimal team was represented by Dr. Atthaillah and Dr. Eng. Muhammad Iqbal from the Architecture Science Laboratory at Malikussaleh University. The collaboration aimed to create a more conducive learning environment by optimizing classroom lighting.

During the first three days, the team conducted surveys and assessments of the lighting conditions at the two elementary schools. The measurements were taken by students from ITB's Engineering Physics program along with architecture students from Unimal. The main focus was on providing innovative solutions to improve the lighting quality, ultimately creating a more comfortable learning atmosphere for students.
On the fourth and fifth days, the lighting improvements were implemented. After the renovations, the team conducted follow-up measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of the changes. According to Dr. Rizki Armanto Mangkuto, the post-improvement assessments showed a significant enhancement in the classroom lighting. "The measurements after the improvements showed a notable increase. This sets a good example for similar efforts in other schools around Lhokseumawe," he explained.
Efendi, S.Pd., M.Pd., the Principal of SDN 1 Banda Sakti, warmly welcomed this initiative. "We are very grateful for the support from ITB and Unimal in improving the lighting in our classrooms. This is an important step towards supporting better teaching and learning processes," he stated. Similarly, Erniati, S.Pd., M.Pd., the Principal of SDN 4 Banda Sakti, appreciated the program. "This initiative greatly helps in creating a more comfortable learning environment for students. We hope this collaboration will continue in the future," she said.
Through this community service program, it is hoped that a more optimal learning environment will be created, supporting the improvement of education quality. Additionally, this project is expected to serve as a model for collaboration between higher education institutions and elementary schools in efforts to improve educational facilities in Indonesia.
