Indonesian Maritime Minister Visits Sabu Raijua for Development and Astrotourism

The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, has scheduled a two-day working visit to Sabu Raijua Regency, from Friday, August 16 to Saturday, August 17, 2024.

The Director of Marine Services at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Miftahul Huda, stated that the purpose of this visit is to develop areas on small, remote, and outer islands, including Sabu Raijua, which consists of three islands: Sabu Island, Raijua Island, and Dana Island. Dana Island, one of the 111 smallest and most remote islands that mark Indonesia's borders, has drawn the attention of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

Miftah explained that Minister Trenggono aims to explore the potential for development in Sabu Raijua, such as salt and seaweed cultivation, which have long been the region's strengths. Additionally, research indicates that Sabu Raijua's skies are the clearest for observing stars, galaxies, and other celestial objects, so during his visit, Minister Trenggono will also experience astrotourism in the area.

During this visit, Minister Trenggono will undertake three key activities: harvesting salt at the salt ponds owned by the Sabu Raijua Regency Government at Kolouju Beach, Menia Village, West Sabu District; handing over tissue-cultured seaweed seeds and planting seaweed seeds with local cultivators in Ledeae Village, Hawu Mehara District.

After the seaweed planting, the group will head to the Sabu Raijua Regent's office hall for a dialogue with the community. In the evening, Minister Trenggono and his entourage will enjoy astrotourism organized by Dr. Chatief Kunjaya, M.Sc., and the Astronomy Team from ITB.

On Saturday, August 17, 2024, Minister Trenggono will serve as the ceremony inspector for the 79th Indonesian Independence Day celebrations at the Sabu Raijua Regency level. Following the event, Minister Trenggono and his entourage will return to Jakarta.

Miftah expressed hope that this ministerial visit will encourage collaboration with other ministries to further develop Sabu Raijua.
