Through the Teras Hijau Project, Communities Can Exchange Waste for Basic Materials and Children's Education

The rising prices of basic necessities in Bandung have become an additional burden for the community. However, Teras Hijau Project offers a unique solution by utilizing organic waste as a medium of exchange. The founder of this project, Melia Famiola, who is also a lecturer at the School of Business and Management at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), established this community three years ago to manage organic waste from Cicendo District.

In their efforts to manage organic waste, Teras Hijau Project transforms it into chicken feed with the help of maggot larvae. The chickens raised on the 750-square-meter farm of Teras Hijau Project lay eggs, which the community can obtain by exchanging organic waste. One egg can be obtained by exchanging 5 points, with each point equivalent to 1 kilogram of organic waste. In addition to eggs, the community can also exchange organic waste for rice, requiring 80 points to receive 1 kilogram of rice.

Melia emphasizes the importance of providing basic necessities rather than money to underprivileged communities. She states that converting organic waste into essential food items is a way to help children from low-income families receive adequate nutrition, supporting their growth and development.

Teras Hijau Project plans to further involve the community by managing inorganic waste in the future. Currently, the community is preparing the infrastructure to handle inorganic waste, viewing waste as a resource that can be utilized.

Additionally, the project supports the education of children from underprivileged families through an Early Childhood Education Program (PAUD). Every Friday, children are invited to learn and play in the Teras Hijau Project garden, creating an environment that fosters creative education for them. Parents can bring their children to the PAUD by exchanging organic waste, providing an opportunity for underprivileged children to access education for free.
