The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is committed to increasing financial literacy in the Mentawai Islands region, which is included in the 3T (disadvantaged, frontier, outermost) areas. This training program aims to provide a better financial understanding to the younger generation, with a focus on students and teachers at SMAN 1 Siberut Selatan. This program takes place from 16 to 18 May 2024, in collaboration with the Indonesian Education University (UPI) and Padjadjaran University (UNPAD).
The Mentawai Islands face various challenges, including limited access to the economy and financial information. This makes financial literacy programs very important to help local communities manage resources better and open up new economic opportunities. Their remote location means access to banking and capital markets is limited, so training aimed at equipping them with the necessary knowledge is important.
Ir. Dzikri Firmansyah Hakam, lecturer at the ITB School of Business Management and head of this service program, emphasized the importance of this program. He said, "This activity is part of my responsibility as a lecturer to increase financial literacy at this school. The aim is for students to understand and manage investments and personal financial reports, so that they can use financial resources wisely."
The training participants, both students and teachers, receive theoretical and practical learning from economic and financial experts. They are taught to understand the risks and potential returns of various types of investments, as well as the importance of setting long-term financial goals. One of the main focuses is on investment in capital markets, aiming to equip participants with the knowledge needed to face the financial challenges of the future.
Apart from that, this training also focuses on creating a personal financial plan, expense management, and identifying investment opportunities that suit the participant's risk profile. To ensure good understanding, students and teachers are assessed regarding the material presented.
The head of SMAN 1 South Siberut, Mrs. Yessi S.Pd., MM, is optimistic about the positive impact of this program. He stated, "We believe that investing in financial literacy will empower our students to take control of their financial future. This is the foundation they need to contribute to our country's progress."
With this program, ITB hopes to provide significant changes in the way the people of the Mentawai Islands view and manage their finances. It is hoped that this initiative will not only have a positive impact on individuals, but also on communities and the country as a whole.
