Innovation and Collaboration between ITB and Unpad in Building the Potential of Parit Village, Karimun

On July 15, 2024, lecturers and students from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Padjadjaran University (Unpad) visited Parit Village, Selat Gelam District, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands. This visit was part of the Community Service Program aimed at enhancing maritime potential, cultural traditions, and developing the creative industry.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by the Village Head and the community of Parit. The event commenced with a Monoprint Workshop at State Elementary School (SDN) 005, where 25 students had the opportunity to learn drawing.

During the visit, ITB Fine Arts lecturer Zusfa Roihan, S.Sn., M.Sn., explained that this initiative was a collaboration between the School of Business and Management (SBM) and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at ITB. Both institutions agreed to develop Parit Village into a tourist destination.

Furthermore, they partnered with Unpad on fisheries to support local economic development. A total of eight individuals from ITB attended, comprising five lecturers and three students. Their goal was to optimize the human and natural resources potential in Parit Village.

Zusfa Roihan elaborated that prior research and mapping of the village's potential had been conducted. Currently, concrete steps are being taken to transform Parit Village into an attractive tourist destination. One of their plans is to construct an archway in the shape of a Tembakul Fish as a new village icon.

In addition to art activities and tourism development, Unpad Fisheries lecturer Dr. Ujang Subhan, S.Psi., M.Si., also engaged in training locals on fish farming. They focused on breeding catfish and ornamental fish such as Discus and Manfish, which have good export potential due to Parit Village's conducive water conditions.

According to Ujang Subhan, Parit Village holds significant potential for fisheries development, which will not only boost the local economy but also support government programs to combat stunting.

Village Head Muhammad Rizli expressed appreciation for ITB and Unpad lecturers and students' contributions in imparting knowledge to the community. They also planned to gift a designed and constructed Tembakul Fish archway as a new symbol for Parit Village.

Thus, this community service visit and program are expected to bring significant positive impacts to the economic and cultural development of Parit Village, enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents.
