On July 26th, in observance of World Mangrove Day, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) collaborated with Pattimura University (Unpatti) to conduct a series of activities aimed at preserving mangrove trees. The event focused on protecting coastal areas and raising awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems.
Led by Dr. Ikha Magdalena from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at ITB, the initiative involved various segments of society. Dr. Magdalena, an expert in mathematical modeling for coastal and marine regions, emphasized the significance of interdisciplinary and institutional collaboration in safeguarding coastal ecosystems. "The active participation of diverse stakeholders demonstrates a collective commitment to environmental stewardship," she stated on Monday (08/05/2024).
Activities included awareness sessions for approximately 250 students from elementary to high school levels at Unpatti Laboratory Schools. These students were educated about the crucial role of mangroves in protecting coastlines from erosion, serving as habitats for diverse marine species, and acting as effective carbon sinks. They were also taught how mangroves function as natural protectors.
In addition to the educational sessions, a beach cleanup was organized in the Ambon Poka Bay area. The event brought together school students, university students, teachers, professors, and local residents to collectively clean up plastic waste and other debris from coastal areas.
Dr. Magdalena expressed hope that these activities would inspire more stakeholders to take tangible actions in preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems across Indonesia.
