On Monday, August 5, 2024, Politeknik Negeri Nusa Utara (POLNUSTAR), located in Tahuna, Kabupaten Kepulauan Sangihe, North Sulawesi, received a special visit from the School of Life Sciences and Technology (SITH) of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). The visit was part of a public lecture delivered by the Head of SITH ITB Team, Prof. Dr. Anggraini Barlian, M.Sc, and Dr. Devi Nandita Choesin, M.Sc, to hundreds of POLNUSTAR students.
The public lecture was divided into two parts. Dr. Devi Nandita Choesin presented material on Mangrove Ecosystems, explaining how to recognize, protect, and manage these ecosystems. Meanwhile, Prof. Anggraini Barlian discussed the Potential of Sea Sponge Biosilica in the Biomedical Field. After delivering the lecture, Prof. Anggraini expressed hope that such activities would continue, considering the abundant biological potential in Sangihe for exploration.
POLNUSTAR Director, Ferdinand Gansalangi, SKM.ME, M.Kes, appreciated the public lecture. He noted that such activities are very beneficial for students in border areas and represent the implementation of cooperation between SITH ITB and POLNUSTAR.
The next day, Tuesday, August 6, 2024, the SITH ITB Community Service Team, along with POLNUSTAR lecturers, continued their activities by conducting community service in Salurang Village, Tabukan Selatan Tenggara District, Kabupaten Kepulauan Sangihe. In addition to providing material on the benefits and uses of mangroves, the team also planted mangroves in the coastal area near the river estuary, which had been damaged by erosion and sedimentation.
The SITH ITB Community Service Team, led by Prof. Dr. Anggraini Barlian, Dr. Devi Nandita Choesin, and Dr. Indra Wibowo, aimed to help the community address environmental issues. Prof. Anggraini stated that this activity is part of ITB's research and community service program. Although it is only a small assistance, it is hoped that the community can accept and continue these activities.
The community service event was also attended by POLNUSTAR Director Ferdinand Gansalangi, district officials, community groups, community leaders, and village youth. Gansalangi expressed his appreciation for the SITH ITB team who had come to the northern tip of Indonesia to help and provide knowledge to the Salurang Village community. The district government also highly appreciated this community service activity, considering it very beneficial for both the community and the government. Makagansa, a representative of the district government, expressed gratitude for the presence of SITH ITB and POLNUSTAR in helping the Salurang Village community restore the damaged mangroves and hoped that the community could continue these activities in the future.
