Helping Improve Shrimp Farming in South Bangka, ITB Creates IoT-Based Water Quality Measurement Device

Shrimp farming is highly sensitive to environmental conditions. Shrimp farmers often experience harvest failures due to various environmental factors. In this condition, losses for cultivators in the South Bangka region can reach billions of rupiah.

One crucial factor in shrimp farming is water quality. To address this issue, a team from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI) and the Microelectronics Center at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), led by Prof. Trio Adiono, Ph.D., handed over a water quality measurement device on Friday, November 10, 2023, to the Acting Head of the Local Implementing Unit (UPTD) at the Fish Breeding Center, Harun, SP.

This activity is carried out to implement the Smart Water Quality System to increase production in the cultivation of vannamei shrimp at the Fish Breeding Center, Pasir Putih, Tukak Sadai District, South Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands. In addition to delivering the device, the ITB team also provided training on how to operate the equipment. This center conducts shrimp farming on a land area of 5 hectares, covering both cultivation and hatchery.

The seeds from this center are used by most cultivators in the region. So far, the center has been manually checking water quality. Besides being time-consuming, manual measurements often lack accuracy. Manual measurements rely on expertise and other external factors in measuring water quality parameters.

To address the above issues and increase vannamei shrimp production while anticipating shrimp mortality with the help of information technology, the ITB team has designed an intelligent device capable of quickly and easily monitoring water quality. The ITB team has successfully created a water quality sensor device with parameters including pH, water temperature, DO (Dissolved Oxygen), and TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) controlled by electronic modules, which then periodically transmit sensor reading data via IoT-based technology, namely LoRa (Long Range) or Bluetooth.
