17 Years After the Pangandaran Tsunami, ITB PM Team Educates SDN 2 Batukaras Students on Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation

Seventeen years ago, the Pangandaran tsunami, triggered by the 2006 Java earthquake, caused significant loss of life and material damage. Understanding earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as knowing what actions to take during such disasters, is crucial.

The ITB Community Service (PM) team decided to provide an educational program to the students of SD Negeri 2 Batukaras, Pangandaran Regency. The ITB PM team comprised undergraduate and graduate students, accompanied by Wiwin Windupranata, Gabriella Alodia, and Intan Hayatiningsih, who are researchers from the Hydro Sciences Group (KK) at FITB.

This activity took place on July 17, 2023, and was conducted in the classrooms of fifth and sixth-grade students. The program was divided into two parts: a material session and a quiz session. During the material session, students gained knowledge about earthquakes and tsunamis, including their causes and the necessary actions to take during a disaster. This session featured Tiara Vani (GD'20) and Kevin Agriva Ginting (GD'20). Additionally, a geographic information system (GIS) was introduced to show evacuation routes in the event of an earthquake or tsunami, led by graduate students Alqintara Nuraghnia and Candida Aulia de Silva Nusantara.

After the material session, students participated in a quiz with prizes, led by Michael Aventa (GD'20) and Sonia Kartini (GD'20). Each student who answered a question correctly received a prize. Besides the students, speakers such as Gabriella Alodia also participated, leading ice-breaking activities and singing earthquake-themed songs. She explained that the tsunami preparedness module was designed for elementary school students.

Meanwhile, Tiara Vani emphasized the importance of this education because the students live near the coast.

At the same time, Michael Aventa expressed the hope that the knowledge gained by the students would be shared with others.

Earthquakes occurring near the sea can trigger another disaster, namely a tsunami. Therefore, it is essential to educate the younger generation to create a resilient community in the face of potential tsunami disasters.
